Joanne: “To all who say we were brave to leave, know that I have never lived so simply and I have never been happier.”
Tomorrow is the end of my adventure at TMK and I already feel that this experience has changed me. Sometimes the community life and the lack of comfort have been difficult, but these are only details compared to the immense happiness that it has been to teach for 10 months in this school. The Karen are an incredible community: generous, welcoming, tolerant and so smiling. To see them study so hard to change their future is so touching. I hope from the bottom of my heart that the civil war, which they have been suffering for 70 years now, will one day end and that they can return to their country and live there peacefully.
I thank from the bottom of my heart all the teachers who have been giving their time for years, some of them to transmit their knowledge to the students and give them the weapons to assert themselves in the future. It is important to know that my karen colleagues (and beloved roommates), never counted their hours to prepare their lessons and that they often went to bed after me in the evening. Some months they didn’t receive any salary but they always gave the best of themselves for their students.
To all those who say that we were brave to leave, know that I have never lived so simply and I have never been so happy. The happiness of sincere sharing is unparalleled.
(And then a mega big up to my adventure girlfriends without whom nothing would have been the same Shirley and Mariane and of course Mathieu)
