Melissa: “This assignment at Thoo Mweh Khee Learning Centre has been the most rewarding experience of my life.”
This assignment at Thoo Mweh Khee Learning Centre was the most rewarding experience of my life. Having had the chance to be with the Karen people and to live alongside them for several months allowed me to (re)discover the notions of simplicity, solidarity and humanity.
I learned that the essential lies in the look and in the gestures, in the gift of one’s person and in listening to the Other; simple things that are easily forgotten in our western cultures.
This real life experience strengthened my convictions while opening me up to a new culture.
In spite of the difficulties that this community has been experiencing for decades, persecuted by the Burmese junta, this population, and especially the children in the school, show great courage and a smile.
These students are the future of the Karen community.
