We asked Tom, a Civic Service volunteer with the Latvian association Cap Espérance, to tell us two anecdotes from his missions there!

At the very beginning of our mission, Sandra advised us to go with the teens and Maris to Lubana because there was a very cool event where we could do a lot of activities with them. That was the case, Maris had everything we needed for kayaking, canoeing, biking, cross-country skiing and much more. That day there was also a river party. Marvin and I were in a canoe kayak one of the teens. We did a round trip on the river and received a medal for participating. In addition, we went on bike rides with the teens and played basketball to train them for tournaments with the Lubana kids. I think they all enjoyed these outings and activities, and I went back to Lubana with four French Scouts for the village festival. We had done a lot of activities (orienteering, frisbee golf…). It was a small tournament with the children and families of Lubana, with rewards for each position and therefore for all the children.

Moreover, many children are very endearing. For example, there are two brothers who arrived at the same time as us. Both of them speak English and that helps me a lot to learn Latvian and to translate what I say to the children who do not understand me. Then with another child, we speak French and I support him a lot in his project to become an artist; I look at and comment on his drawings to give him some advice. Moreover, a fratry of 4 children and their cousins should arrive soon, which will motivate us even more to give our best to all these children.
Finally, I have taken the habit every evening to think about the activities that Marvin and I could do with the children because tomorrow is another day, and the children who will be there are not necessarily the same as those of the day before.
