Description of the partner

In India, only a third of women of working age are employed, and unlike other developing countries, the labor force participation rate of Indian women has been declining over the past ten years.

Village Community Development Society (VCDS) created the Navajothi Women’s Movement to enable women to fight for equal rights, financial and social independence and empowerment through education and skills development. VCDS has set up a sewing school dedicated exclusively to training women and girls from rural and impoverished backgrounds to acquire the skills they need to become financially independent.

Village Community Development Society works for the equality, empowerment and upliftment of disadvantaged and marginalized people, particularly Dalits. VCDS is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in the village of Vellakulam, Marakkanam Taluk, founded in 1980. It also works in education, organic and traditional farming, women’s empowerment, environmental protection and youth training in over 60 villages.

The mission

Volunteers will provide support for various activities run by the Village Community Development Society (VCDS):

  • Support for recreational and educational activities: Volunteers will support teachers in providing educational support to children in the various villages and communities supported by the association. They can also suggest and take part in recreational activities.
  • Support for agricultural activities: Volunteers will support farmers in their agricultural activities. They may also be involved in monitoring and documenting agricultural activities at the VCDS farm.
  • Support for the sewing school: Volunteers will help beneficiaries to devise a strategy for promoting the school’s activities and disseminating them.
  • Support for awareness-raising activities: Volunteers will support the local team in the construction of educational content to raise awareness on subjects such as menstrual and personal hygiene through peer groups. This will help girls and women to better understand the changes and challenges they face every day.
